Canceling rides, does it help the driver?

Hi guys. I’m just an occasional passenger that’s had this weird thing happen to me a few times in a row and I just want to understand.

Iam a nurse at a hospital who works with Uber (I think somehow someway, unfortunately out of my pay grade) to have our mobile patients picked up and brought home if they have no other options. The other day I was waiting outside with my patient (dressed in regular clothes, not indicating she was a patient at all) waiting for her Uber ride. On the app we saw the driving approaching and could see him on the street. Without stopping or even slowing down he continued driving and canceled the ride. I didn’t think much of it because I was like maybe they didn’t realize the address was the hospital and they didn’t want to deal with that nonsense. Another driving picked it up and my patient went off.

But then today, my subway was down and the delay was over an hour. I walked back up to the street and ordered an Uber. Three drivers did the same thing to me before I finally got one to stop! My subway is many blocks from the hospital so it’s not that, unless they saw my scrubs and didn’t want that in their car. I have a 5 star rating and I’ve never been an issue so it’s not that. Does picking up rides you don’t feel like taking and canceling them give some kind of benefit?

Edit: wow guys, your experiences are wild and I’m so sorry you have all been through situations like this. I didn’t make this post to specifically ask about medical rides but I’m glad you are all talking about it because you guys are right!!! It shouldn’t be like this!!! Our hospital screens people before we put them in an Uber, they have to be fully physically and mentally well, able to get around by themselves, etc - basically people that would go outside and order their own Uber on d/c on a normal basis but need help affording the cost. I know that I personally have never put someone inappropriate in an Uber but clearly many hospitals are and I’m so sorry you are all experiencing that. You’re right, there’s special companies for that and they are the only ones that should be doing those types of jobs.

Edit 2: I just want to clarify also that I wasn’t really questioning people canceling a medical ride (they pull up the hospital and see a patient and cancel). I really only mentioned that because it was the same thing I experienced with my personal account yesterday when I was blocks away from the hospital. I wasn’t sure if people accepted and then canceled because they saw my scrubs or because of something else such as needing to accept a certain amount of rides in a time period but not actually wanting to use the service at that time. I’ve now learning the lack of information you are giving so I’ve been enlightened and know that probably plays a major role. That’s crazy!! I’m sorry you are all dealing with this.
