Rodeo is Overrated and astroworld is clearly Travis' best album!
First of all, Rodeo is a great album and was definitely ahead of its time. I can't think of a trap album from or before 2015 that still sounds this good today. But I have to say that I think it's simply overrated in the context of Travis' entire discography.
There are rappers who have a magnum opus in their catalog that overshadows all their other projects. Definitely not Travis.
Whenever people have to name the best Travis album it's Rodeo this, Rodeo that and it starts to piss me off.
I'm not concerned here with personal preferences, but rather to name what is objectively best insofar as it is possible.
and I'm sorry if you have to choose Travis' best album it's just Astroworld, sry. this has many different reasons. the most important of all is production. Product-wise it's one of the best albums ever! at least in the rap genre. Travis' other albums are also in the top league, but astroworld is a lot better. The thing is, there is no album that sounds like astroworld. Mike Dean's synths and all that. It has a completely unique aesthetic. Rodeo is more of a typical dark trap sound from back then and not nearly as specific. Point 2 is that the album is perfectly self-contained. Stargazing to Wake Up is a 10/10 track run that rodeo doesn't manage in the slightest. Beyond that, there aren't really any fillers or particularly weak tracks. NC-17 and WHO?WHAT? don't stand out that much to me. Rodeo, on the other hand, has some of the best Travis tracks oat. But when it comes to 90210 in particular, people too often like to act as if it was by far the best Travis song of all time nothing will ever happen again. that's nonsense! Stop trying to be god is beautiful and has so many highlights like Stevie Wonder's harmonica or kid cudi at the beginning. Generally one of his best beats or I've never heard anything like Astrothunder. In addition, Rodeo also has clearer hangups in the tracklist than Astroworld. wasted could also be an asap rocky song from back then, piss on your grave sounds like a b side song from yeezus and kanye is so incredibly annoying on this song. Flying High doesn't fit with the rest of the vibe from the album I Can Tell, at least I think it's only okay at best. Point 3 is that astroworld is the better concept album. I know a common criticism of the album is that Travis doesn't show enough depth on the album but that never bothered me. I mean astroworld really feels like a crazy theme park with a psychedelic twist. There is something to see and discover on every corner. It's simply the ultimate fun feel good trap album, so I didn't really miss the deep tracks. In addition, the astroworld festival has a personal context for Travis and he wants to bring that feeling back with the album. Rodeo is more of a promotion story and darker. about how his life changes with fame. I love songs like Apple Pie, but when I look for deep cuts I hear artists like Future who pack something like that lyrically much better. I don't know, personal insights were never that important to me in Travis' music and I don't think that's his main appeal. Of course everyone can see it differently.
Conclusion, I think a lot of people are just very nostalgic when it comes to rodeo or like it more because it's the underdog in Travis' catalog after the huge hype that astroworld caused. In my opinion, Travis has actually just continued to grow as an artist. There are very few artists where I consider their debut album to be the best. Travis has found his own sound a lot more on astroworld, the album is more consistent, has more highlight tracks and when someone asks me why Travis' music is so good I tell them to listen to astroworld, then enjoy Rodeo.
