Is it ok to have “favorite” clients?
I’m still an intern (substance abuse recovery site), and despite not being perfect (what is?!), I generally like my job and feel good doing it. Because of the nature of the job, some clients tend to come and go like the wind, which is sad. Those that are there longer I tend to build a better rapport with over time, which I know is natural. But do you all ever get a client (or a few) that you just really look forward to the sessions more than others?
I don’t treat any of my clients preferentially, not to worry! But there is one in particular I find utterly unique and fascinating, they give me tons to think about about how to help them which has made me do more research, and I’ve seen them make stellar progress in many areas which makes me so happy for them. I am careful with how I treat them however because they do seem to place a lot of weight on my words, which also keeps me mindful. They’re also just phenomenal, behavior-wise. I find the “challenge” of helping them with their unique situation and mindset fun and a healthy kind of pressure, especially as we’ve made a lot of headway into some of their issues. They have a very unique way of perceiving things which can be negative or positive, but overall they’re just so interesting and I feel kind of guilty thinking they’re my favorite to work with.
As long as all my clients are treated with the same respect, care, etc., and I maintain professionalism and ethics and keep the goals and focus straight, it’s not harmful to have a favorite, right? Do you all have a favorite or two, too?
