Is 1000 yards still a big deal?
I've been a football fan for over half a century. All of my life, the gold standard stat for running backs and receivers has been 1000 yards in a season. When I was a youngster, the regular season was 14 games. To reach 1000 yards in a 14-game season required an average of about 72 yards/game. That's why OJ's 2003 yards is so amazing. He did that in a 14-game season (143 yards/gm average). When the season expanded to 16 games, that average went down to 62.5 yds/gm. Now that the season is 17 games, the average is about 59 yds/game. That doesn't seem all that impressive for professional runners and especially receivers. Should 1000 yards still be the measure, or is it time to adjust it upward to 1200 or 1300?
