Yearly Reminder that Jimmy Butler Is The Most Egregious Foul Merchant in NBA History
Look, I'm tired of pretending this is "crafty" or "smart basketball." Jimmy "Free Throw" Butler has mastered the art of playing unwatchable basketball and somehow gets praised for it. He's a Kyle Kuzma-level basketball player who somehow figured out how to get 2.5x as many FTs on the same volume of shots.
Here are the only players in NBA history with a higher free throw rate than Butler (min. 20,000 minutes):
- Dwight Howard
- Cedric Maxwell
- Rudy Gobert
- DeAndre Jordan
- Corey Maggette
- Tyson Chandler
- Dikembe Mutombo
- Alonzo Mourning
- Artis Gilmore
- Shaquille O'Neal
- Moses Malone
- David Robinson
- Danny Schayes
- Charles Barkley
- Andrei Kirilenko
- Adrian Dantley
- Mark Olberding
All centers and power forwards on that list except for Maggette("Bad Porn"), Kirilenko, and Dantley. Arguably, you could include Charles Barkley because of his height, but Barkely played at PF.
If we look only at Jimmy's career since he went to Miami, his FT/FG ratio is .605 which would put him right behind Dikembe Mutombo and ahead of Alonzo Mourning, Shaq(who teams literally fouled on purpose so he'd shoot as many FTs as possible), Moses Malone(greatest offensive rebounder in history), and David Robinson.
You know, guys who actually were GOAT centers and legitimately got fouled because they were unstoppable around the basket.
