Modafinil & Methylene Blue
Hi guys, I recently received my 10mg capsules of methylene blue. I am very excited to tryit for its cognitive benefits.
I take 25-50mg occasionally to focus at work. I wanted to know if anyone has a legitimate answer whether I can mix 10mg of methylene blue with 25mg of Modafinil?
Chat GPT gave the following response:
Methylene blue and modafinil can potentially interact, and caution is advised if taking both together. Here’s why:
Potential Interactions: 1. Serotonin Syndrome Risk • Methylene blue is a monoamine oxidase inhibitor (MAOI), meaning it can increase levels of serotonin, dopamine, and norepinephrine in the brain. • Modafinil affects dopamine and norepinephrine by inhibiting their reuptake. • Combining them may increase the risk of excessive neurotransmitter activity, leading to serotonin syndrome. • Symptoms: Confusion, sweating, agitation, rapid heart rate, high blood pressure, and in severe cases, seizures.
- CYP Enzyme Inhibition • Methylene blue inhibits cytochrome P450 (CYP) enzymes, particularly CYP2D6. • Modafinil is metabolized mainly by CYP3A4, but it can also be influenced by CYP2D6. • If methylene blue slows down modafinil metabolism, it may increase modafinil’s effects and side effects (e.g., anxiety, heart palpitations, headaches).
- Increased Blood Pressure & Heart Rate • Both compounds stimulate the nervous system and can raise blood pressure and heart rate. • Taking them together may amplify this effect, leading to potential cardiovascular stress.
How to Use Them Together Safely (If Needed) • Avoid high doses of methylene blue (low-dose, pharmaceutical-grade is less risky). • Monitor for symptoms of serotonin syndrome (agitation, rapid heartbeat, shivering, sweating). • Space them apart (e.g., modafinil in the morning, methylene blue later). • Stay hydrated and avoid additional stimulants (caffeine, nicotine).
