Am I playing wrong by not using guns?

Some background: I've played most of the souls games now, and I'm getting close to finishing BB. I can fight Gehrman, but I'm taking care of some optional bosses that I missed first. I'm saving the DLC for a second play-through.

I used the pistol a bit early on, but 2-handing the axe and keeping distance from enemies has carried me through most of the game. I've enjoyed the game, but I definitely feel like I'm bringing my Dark Souls tactics in and missing something. Should I be using guns more to do visceral attacks? From what I understand that's their primary purpose. I think what threw me off was trying to stagger big enemies and bosses. I would fail to stagger and take tons of damage. Can most enemies and bosses be staggered?

I really loved Sekiro so a more fast-paced combat style is appealing. I'm thinking of starting with the saw cleaver next time and using the gun more.

EDIT: thanks for the input everyone! I don't believe there's a "wrong" way to play a game, so I regret that wording, but I've learned alot here. I'll definitely choose a different weapon next time and see how it plays out.
