To all the parasomnia folks - hypnopompia specifically

How does yours show up? For those who don’t know what hypnopompia is: it’s the state between sleeping and waking up. For example, you’ve been asleep for a while, and your body starts waking up, there’s this in between state where you’re not entirely awake and sometimes you’ll experience hypnopompic hallucinations. They can be visual, auditory, tactile, olfactory. Mostly visual, though.

For me, mine is very intense and distressing, especially when my stress and exhaustion levels are sky high. I explained what this hypnopompic state feels like to my therapist - it’s like part of me is still dreaming and therefore thinks the hallucinations are real, and then other half of me is super lucid and is trying to wake me up but just can’t be heard by the dreaming part of me. So I know I’m experiencing hypnopompia while it’s happening, but I also don’t at the same time.

Is this how it happens for everyone who experiences hypnopompia? This dual lucidity and unconsciousness? It’s a very strange phenomenon for me; my therapist thinks it may even be a form of depersonalization/derealization, but I’m not sure about that.

Anyone else get hypnopompia?
