Desire & Fear
All my life, I have always been fascinated by the human psyche and how it perceives the world, it's the reason why I want to be a psychologist and philsopher.
Through my years I'd concluded that all of human behaviour and emotion can be traced back to pride, which in my definition, is our never-ending nature to be more. It's even the highest of the 7 capital sins in Christian lore. The rest of the sins all go back to pride and being or having more.
Lust - More pleasure. Envy - More than what's already had. Greed - More belongings. Gluttony - More indulgence.
... and so on and so forth. Sin is what defines us as human beings, so pride is our most valuable aspect, we argue to each other over it (Twitter mention), it's what gives meaning to what we value. Pride is Desire, Desire is where all our choices root from, we all want to be more.
But that all changed when I discovered "The Magnus Archives". I realized that Desire is a conscious human aspect, but the the thing about psychology is that it doesn't just focus on our conscious behaviour, it delves deeper and into subconscious.
As I listened through all 200 episodes, season after season after season. I realized that Desire isn't where all our thoughts root out from, it is Fear.
Think about it, we're looking at the root of our choices, thoughts, and emotions. What's the first thing we feel when we are born, it's not sadness or happiness, it's fear. We have just been born and we have no idea who, what, where, how, and why we are... So we fear, we cry out.
Look back to the sins.
Lust - The fear of numbness. Sloth - The fear of pain. Greed - The fear having less. Gluttony - The fear of monotony. Wrath - The violent fear of weakness. Pride - The fear of not being more, of being less.
Envy intrigues me because it is often the beginning of sin, not the root, but the first step. In Dante's Inferno, the punishment for Envy is basicslly blindness. Similar to th Eye, Envy is like a parasite that connects them all together. In which case by simply seeing and knowing something, you sin and you fear.
Now, with The Magnus Protocol and the theories of the cases being about obsession or Desire, I believe that Jonny is now exploring the other side of my theory of Desire & Fear, the side of conscious Desire other than Fear.
Also, the more Fear you have, the more people Desire to take advantage of you and the more you Desire, the more you cause fear unto others. That's why The 14 Fears "wished to be more" (Pride) as quoted from Jon in the TMA finale. So, Fear is still more powerful that Desire. Subconscious & Conscious, Subject & Object.
Note: I hope people are right about The Hungers (as they call them) being the new Entities because it be better if they explored the unknown once again instead of just tackeling what we already know.
