I’m getting tired of having my fics pushed aside because of word counts and themes.
I usually don’t pay much attention to stats but I’ve been getting a lot about word counts and kudos recently and how everyone just loves fluffy fics and longfics, which is the exact opposite of what I read and write. I write 1k-2k word angsty one-shots that focus on family and friends, and I love my audience (which includes me), but sometimes it sucks knowing people probably gloss over not only my fics, but some of the most well written fics that have ever graced my eyes just because they’re “too short”, “have no romance”, or “too angsty”. The only time I wrote fluff, I got 15k hits and it made me so unreasonably mad because it was just a small silly thing, not one of the fics I poured so much of my effort into. I’m very grateful, but I wish that energy was put in a series of mine.
Even worse, I saw some people talking about how they avoid shorter fics because they see it as a sign of a new writer. I’ve been writing fanfic for 6 years and have kept that length, and again, there are so many amazing authors that stick to one-shots and shorter fics.
I also found out my style of writing is not only a bit more uncommon, but certain aspects are straight up disliked. I’ve been told my fics read similar to poetry, usually in a good light, but I saw some post and comments that said they disliked those kinds of fics.
It’s really stupid, but it’s like of like, “I wish people would at least give it a try.”
Edit: I’m not blaming anyone, I’m not saying everyone should start reading angst or my fics are amazing, I’m just a frustrated because I’ve been surrounded in many different places by people who gloss over aspects of fanfic I like. This isn’t some hate post
