What is the North Shore like now?
I grew up in Wilmette in the 1960's & 70's. Attended Avoca for elementary school and graduated from NTE. I never moved back after college, landing in NYC & ultimately Connecticut. I've got to admit, I think my experience at New Trier really informed the person I became and the values I hold. But it might have been different then. When I was there, even though the area was extremely wealthy, we had zero awareness of that, gave absolutely no thought to who was rich & who wasn't. One's family's wealth had no bearing on social standing. Even the "richest" kids drove beat up old cars....I never had or witnessed a single instance of money-based snobbery. The education that New Trier provided set me up to be comfortable interacting with any and all echelons of society. I came away with a real grasp of English, & history (& I was in no way a good student). Freshman year kicked off with a mandatory reading of The Odyssey. I took level 2 (I assume levels are long gone- level 2 was for....mediocre to poor students) Latin and have reaped huge benefits from that. So my question is- is the North Shore still like a village? Or has consumerism & capitalism devoured it? It was a really sweet place once.
